Benefits of the organic garden
What is the project about?
An excellent option to take advantage of the green spaces in our gardens is to create an organic garden, in addition to creating the benefit of obtaining crops in a healthier and more controlled way, it also helps us save costs within the home and reduce the impact of environmental pollution, since we generate vegetables only for our consumption, the residues are organic and can be used again as fertilizer. As part of our sustainability awareness projects, within the company we have formed a commission, in which we teach employees how to carry out their own garden at home.
They will be in charge of the realization and care of the garden, they will learn everything necessary to ensure a good growth of the crop and the preparation of the land; The main idea is that afterwards, the participants will have to transmit the acquired knowledge within their family and their community.
How to start the project?
The first step of the project is to analyze and prepare the land, you must remove all the grass that is necessary, moisten the soil to remove some stones that hinder the growth of the seeds. This initial stage is known as “plank preparation” and generally measures one meter wide by four meters long. This initial step serves as a laboratory, to analyze how much water you need, how the seeds germinate, and even the influence of sunlight.
You can use part of the soil that you removed, some stones and wood as a fence, to have the plank area well defined, and prevent the sand and compost from draining from the planting area.
Once these steps have been carried out, it is time to grab some extra tools and start making grooves or channels crosswise, within the delimited land for the plank, in these channels the seeds that you chose for your garden will go; keep in mind that some vegetables have large roots, such as pumpkins, carrots, beets, etc. So you must analyze the seeds well and give them some space so that they can each take advantage of the nutrients in the soil.
A good help can be the use of fertilizers, this will ensure that you get the most out of your sowing. At the moment that you are placing the seeds in the furrows, you can mix them with the fertilizers, in an equitable way and without abusing much.
When all the previous processes have been carried out, the only thing left is to place the sand back in each of the grooves or channels, covering the seeds, without putting much pressure on them. Water them daily and keep them under observation.
This is the first phase of the organic garden carried out within the premises of the BDA company, in another installment we will be commenting on how all the work carried out progressed, and the moment of the final transplant of the plants to the definitive garden.
